Termination of Employment due to petty theft

I have been stealing food from the cafeteria over the last few months. I was caught on Friday. My employer has summoned me to a meeting on Wednesday at noon. In my statement I admitted what I had done and offered to pay restitution. My employer is not the employer of the cafeteria. They are in the same building. Can I be fired. If so can they keep my pension. Also can they keep my severance allowance.

Yes, you can be fired. You should be fired. Stealing is wrong even if you pay it back after you've been caught. They can also file criminal charges, so don't be surprised if you get a court summons. Yes, they can keep your severance. I believe (I could be wrong on this - so someone please let me know for sure) they can also hold your last paycheck if there is a criminal case against you due to theft.

I guess the severity of the punishment depends upon how much you took.
