What do i do now?

I was served a summons in from Justice Court in Las Vegas where I used to live for a medical collection that I am almost 95% sure was paid. I not able to file an answer-what do I do? I tried calling the lawyer but got no response. I now live in Texas and have no money or time to go back.

If it's just a medical collections I would imagine you can solve the problem over the phone especially if you think you paid it. Get info about the debt, and find the record of you paying it (check carbon copies, bank statements, etc.). You should always get receipts for anything medical related because their billing is so complicated you have to track everything for accuracy.

If you find out that the bill was paid - don't forget to check your credit reports (all 3 of them) and file a dispute to get it off your record.

I agree with Jodi on this. Find out if it really was paid, and look at your credit reports and things. If you did pay for it, there should be a trail, either from your bank or CC or insurance of you paying it.

If you pay the outstanding amount owed, you won't have to go to court. It's possible to set up a payment schedule. They would rather settle it with you beforehand.

If you dispute the amount, then you'll have to go to court, or prove beforehand what you've paid. Your bank can provide copies of the canceled checks or withdrawals.

Either way, make sure you get it resolved, you don't want it ruining your credit. You can obtain a copy of your credit report for free - it will contain any collections against you.

Here's some info on credit reports: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/freereports.shtm
