What happens if you blatently lie to a police officer stemming from pure fear?

I was seen placing an item worth 3.00in my purse by a police officer. I had no intentions of stealing the item just merely freeing up my hands to peruse some books. When he asked if I paid for the item I told hi
no but he arrested me anyways for theft in progress. He searched my purse and found 2other items, one a matchbox car and the other a .50 notebook which I said had been purchased days prior. Actually I had also placed the
in my purse to free my hands at the same time. I stuck with my story for 2days and guilt overwhelmed me so I finally confessed to my lawyer what I had done.

Unfortunately, you were stealing. It would have been a little bit better to think of a better excuse of putting things in your purse, instead of "freeing your hands." That is pretty obvious, as it doesn't make very much sense. Those items aren't very large, and you could have put them on a shelf to free up your hands.

Anyways, you will probably just get petty theft, unless you have a history, then perhaps more will ensue. But it shouldn't be anything more than a slap on the wrist. You probably didn't even steal $6.00 worth of stuff.

Thanks for your answer, however I know that I was charged with theft however it's lying to the officer that seems to have ruffled feathers in the district attorneys office.
What additional charge cod they impose and how serious is lying to an officer of the law?
I have a speeding ticket on "record", am 46 years old
and have had a stroke thus holding things is challenging
and in my own special way of viewing things I figured since I wasn' going to steal the item anyways I would use my purse as a shopping bag. Inow realize that my honest intentions are not viewed in the same way as others. My hindsight is clearly 20\20 and I will have to "think twice"
before I make a impulsive desision which is one of the daily struggles of suffering a front lobe stroke.

All that you just said to me should be explained to whoever you speak with when it comes to the lying part. My apologies for the stroke, and the challenges it brings. I honestly thought you were stealing it, and you weren't actually just using your purse as a shopping bag. I thought you were just telling us what you said to the officer when you were lying.

Yes, I'm pretty sure they don't appreciate a 46 year old lady lying to a police officer for "stealing" things. I really don't think they will really do anything, though, in regards to that. It should just make their case of charging you with theft stronger, but no additional charges or anything like that for lying. Its all in context, and you were lying about why some small items were in your purse. Its not as if you lied on whether you beat someone up, or took thousands of dollars.

You may want to obtain your own psychological evaluation. You may be a kleptomaniac but you may also be suffering from a medical condition which has effected your impulse control (ie stealing small useless items) I have seen this many times in older people with no prior history of criminal activity. No the lying isn't a charge except with the FBI it just makes the case stronger. Bring a letter from your doctor to court if he has a finding.
