What proof do I need to bring a person to small claims court?

I paid someone $1000.00 for fencing supplies back in April and he was supposed to deliver the supplies two weeks ago and I have been given every excuse possible for them not arriving. Because of the hassle of all this he has offered to put up the fence for free. We have told him we would like our supplies so we can get the fence up now. He was answering my calls at first and now he isn't. I have the cancelled check with his name and what the money was for. Is that enough to bring him to court
