Winning the lottery and letting someone else claim it to stay incognito

what if, just completly hypothetical mind you, but what if i won say, the mega millions for 25 million after taxes, but i wanted to avoid my name in the paper and all of the publicity. so i go to say, my mother in law, and get het to claim the money, and in return she is promised 5 million of the wind fall. she claims the money, and deposits it in a bank where we both have accounts, 5 million in her account, and the remainder in mine. how would the taxes play out on my portion? it seems that a person can deposit monies into any account they choose. would there be tax liability if that account happenned to be mine? and if so, how do you avoid this? how do you claim the money, but avoid the spotlight? not trying to avoid taxes, just the publicity. where am i wrong, and how would you do i

You would have to pay taxes on the "gift". Lottery ticketts are often given as gifts, so it doesn't matter who bought the ticket, just who signs the back.

If you are serious . . . get a good lawyer and tell him that you wish to remain anonymous. I think there was a guy on the Lost show who won the lottery . . .

If you are going to do that, make sure you get a good lawyer to make sure it is all written in a contract. Just so you can take it to court and prove it WAS your winning ticket and she doesn't stiff you and move out of the country.
