Navy Band

I'm a US Navy Corpsman with the desire to join the Navy Band. I had 3 questions that I haven't been able to get a clear answer towards.
1) Exactly what do I need to know for the audition in order to be accepted?
2) If there is an MU A-School, do they teach you how to read music?
3) If you are not that good reading music or you haven't read music in a long time, will that disqualify you from being able to join the band?
4) If accepted, is it true that you are automatically an E6?

Hi ... if you are still interested, you may visit this site. It will explain everything you need to know about joining the Navy Band.

To answer your questions (I am a Navy Bandsman):

1. It depends on your instrument. Basically the audition will comprise of these three things. Prepared pieces. Scales. Sightreading.

2. Yes there is an A-School for the MU rate. They do teach you how to read music there; however, you must already be able to read music since you have to pass a sightreading portion of the audition.

3. It all depends on how well you do on the other parts of the audition. You have to be able to play at a certain level before being considered into the Navy Band program.

4. E-6 is only guaranteed for premier band members (Naval Academy Band and the Navy Band in Washington DC).

Hopefully this answers everything you'd want t know! You can visit that site and contact an audition supervisor if you would like more information.
