Breaking a Shared Lease

Hi, my name is Fanni Molnar, and I am inquiring about breaking a lease both my ex-boyfriend and I share. At first he agreed to stay on at the apt. and sign me off on a responsibility form, and now he is refusing and, threatening to leave me with the lease while he takes off to BC. What are my options? He is making it extremely difficult for me to be approved for another apartment, and he has kicked me out because he pays the rent, so I need to be able to find a place to live. All of my belongings are out of the apt. its been about one week and he is refusing any options I give him. Please contact me back when you have time. Thank you.

He is definatly using the apartment as a control issue. You can always try to explain this issue to the leasing department and see if they will let you get off the lease. That won't usually happen though - but its worth a shot. If he leaves and you have the apartment, you can find another roommate or sublet the apartment to someone else, just be sure to do it officially in writing so if they default on the rest you are NOT responsible. See what your lease says about subletting. He cannot make you leave if you are on the lease whether you pay anything or not! I hope some of this helped - I'll be on for a while so if you have other questions - let me know and I will try to help!
