Decorative curbing with or without cable

I live in Wisconsin and am getting bids on decorative curbing for around my house. One company uses cable in their concrete and the other two companies do not. The one with cable claims that it will be stronger and will hold the curbing together if it cracks. The otheer guys claim they have not had a problem over the years and that cable has not been used in this area long enough to prove that it is better. Is it worth the extra money to have the cable installed in the decorative concrete?

Thanks,
Norb

Cable is like wire mesh or rebar in concrete, it does make it strong, thats why all big projects, and most small ones use this concept, my father in law who has passed , done this work , and he always used this stuff, pouring drives, walls, decorative curbing, ect, you want this to last for a long time, and curbing takes a lot of weather, and abuse, so spend a little more , and love your home!

Generally speaking, any type of metal or cable running through concrete helps guard against cracking. This is why most concrete slabs have 1/2" rebar running 2' on center each direction. I would suggest thought that you make sure that the curbs are sealed after they have been poured and are routinely re-sealed to keep the concrete from absorbing water. This is really only necessary if the cables are 'bare' or untreated metal as moisture penetration can eventually rust the cable, which would cause expansion and eventually cracking.

Really you have to ask yourself it is worth the extra amount. Personally, I think I would decide how much effort or heartache it would cause if I had to tear the broken/damaged curb out if it did indeed crack up. If it is just a slight amount more... it may be a good value for your piece of mind.
