My 17 year old son made over $3000.00 this year. Can I still claim him as a dependent and can he still get refund when he files?

My daughter did this last year, and yes I still claimed her as a dependent, but she could not claim herself when filing her 1040ez, however she was able to claim a student exemption because she was a full time student, and still got everything back. You need only provide 50% of there total support to claim them. Now mind you, this was for 2006 tax year, some rules may have changed, though I doubt it, but you still may want to check with a tax pro, most will answer a simple question like this for free.

You can claim him, OR he can claim himself. But not both.

The tax benefits of you claiming him way outweigh any tax break he gets. Usually until either they are out of college, or he will save more on taxes then you would if you claimed him, is the time to let him start claiming himself.

Your son is your dependent ,if he is in your household even if he is making what comes out to about 220dollars a month.if you are providing over half of his support you can claim him on your taxes.
