I would think that assassination would be where is person is paid to kill another person. Murder is where one person kills another person typically without being paid. I hope this answers your question. Thank you.

Murder is Murder technically there is no difference at all. If I pay someone to kill someone else covertly it is still murder even though I may not have pulled the trigger myself. A better question perhaps would be what is the difference between conspiracy to murder and murder.

I would think that assassination is killing a high political/governmental figure. And murder is pretty much killing people in general.

The difference between the word "assassination" and the word "murder" is as follows:

The word "assassination" implies the killing, or murder, of a person who is in the public eye, usually a political leader. For example, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

Assassination attempts are failed attempts to kill, or murder, a political leader. For example, there was a failed attempt to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. You can read President Ronald Reagan's own interesting description of this well-known failed assassination attempt at:
http://www.ronaldreagan.com/march30.html

You don't normally hear the word "assassination" being used when describing the killing of a non-political leader or of an animal. In these cases, the word "murder" would be used instead.

A murder is generic and just a term to describe killing another person. While an assassination is a planned murder of a high profile individual.
