There are two credit for people who have been paying educational costs for themselves, their spouse or dependants, but you have to choose one of the two because you can only file one for each student each year.

You can include expenses such as tuition and fee, but not room and board, insurance, transportation or other living expenses.

The Hope Credit is for students who are freshmen or sophomores, enrolled in a program that leads to a degree, certification or other recognized credential, is taking at least 1/2 of the normal full-time load and is free of federal or state felonies. You can use this credit for 2 years.

The lifetime learning credit is not based on a students workload. It is more for students that take one or two classes at a time.
