Chewing works well too, most humans don't do a thorough job of it, however.

But, yep, Bahrain has it spot on.

Chickens can not chew! Chickens that free range do so with not only interest of bugs and food but also tiny particles of dirts and small rocks. The food and other particles then enter what is called a crop this is where a good portion of their food is broken down with sand and grit that was pecked along with their food, in the crop the food is churned with the grit and broken down so that the chicken may then digest its food.
