How do I use the green keys on my laptop

I have a acer aspire 5920-6094 laptop and I can't figure how to use the french keys on it.

I have an Acer laptop and the keys have some that have green letters and signs. I accidently hit a or some keys and when I tried to hit the period key what came up was é or Ê. I couldnt remember what key or keys that I had hit so I could not rerurn to the normal keys. I had to reboot to make it normal. I have tried to get answers from Acer to no avail. I hope that some body will be able to help me.

I would REALLY love to know why this happens, I hate it, and having to close all the windows and restart is annoying when it happens for the millionth time. Anyone with the know-how, please help!
