How do i write the letter to my principal...about body peircings?

My friend was expelled for wearin her nose ring. i have my tragus peirced and my belly button and so many other girls at my school have peircings too. my school is way old-fashioned and has a strict ear-lobe only peircing policy which the other schools in our county DONT have...its stupid.

Im mad that my friend got punished for that. and even madder that the principle told her she should have never got it in the first place, which i think was crossing his boundaries. I want to write him an annoymous letter...nothing mean, but nothing to nice either. I want my opioion voiced, defaintly. I want him to realize that athletic people, cowboys, tomboys, art lovers, writers, swimmers, artist....(these are ways to express yourself) just like peircings are. any ideas?????

Unfortunately you don't have much of a voice in high school meaning that they don't have to listen or care what you think.

with that said you can still voice your opinion. If you are truely passionate about writing, or about the cause. contact the local school paper. or write a blog and market it.

This is a hard one to fight, though I do believe expulsion was a little much for a nose ring, I wear a nose ring, half the female teachers at my kids high school wear a nose ring, the head of social services here wears a nose ring, maybe we are more liberal being a college town. When I was in high school there was a no shorts rule and we are talking southern cali in the early 80's. But the girls could wear mini skirts. This didn't make sence to alot of people, so one day the boys stage a protest and all wore mini skirts to school, most were suspended, and some parents called in the ACLU because it was unconstitutional to say a boy couldn't wear a skirt just because he was a boy. The court ruled in favor of the boys. You may consider contacting the ACLU, they will tell you if your friend has a valid grievance. I am sorry, but I am one of those moms who believes in freedom of expression, my 17 year old has her nose and belly button pierced, and a tatoo that I designed for her. ( she got my nose pierced for me ;))

If you have other students that agree with your case, write out a petition. Have them say if they have any piercings. High schoolers have just as much right to freedom of speech as anyone else.

You might also consider writing a letter to the School Board in your district. If the principal is crossing the line the School Board should know about it.

Just be polite and diplomatic when you write your letter. If you sound disrespectful or vengeful they wont listen to you.

I guess I would also offer this as a suggestion...

Read the book 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' by Dale Carnegie.

It offers a lot of great advice for writing letters in difficult situations.

The school can set up any dress code policy that they want and enforce it any way they chose. If they have a no nose ring policy, then she will have to remove it until she graduates. or she could transfer.

I agree, rules like that are lame.

Schools can change the policy any time they want.

Do you remember the Columbine shootings that happened back a few years ago? I went to High School not to far from there, like the next closest high school away. Because of the shooting and the negative stereotype of the black trench coat, all of the Jefferson County schools enacted a new no trench coat policy, and wearing one was grounds for suspension. Lame, very lame. But true.

Unless you transfer, you'll just have to deal with the no piercing policy until after graduation.

Take out your nose ring and get a tattoo.
