I live on a third floor apartment, how will I get out if front door is where the fire is?

Yesterday our next door neighbor had a fire on her front porch and she couldn't get out the door with her invalid uncle. Luckily for her, his bedroom window (which is next to the front door) was not engulfed and she got him out that way. And now I wonder how we will get out if the whole front area is on fire. The only way out is off the back deck which is 3 floors up. I have seen those ladders that unfold, made of rope and hang on to the deck railing. Are these reliable do you know? I think we have to get something to have on hand, but I just don't know what. Can you give me your best shot? Now that its a reality, I'm freaked. Thanks, Pam I will do whatever you suggest. Today, if I can!

I would suggest the rope ladder like you said, maybe look at some camping or hunting stores for better quality ones, maybe some extra fire extinguishers around the place to.
as far as maybe someone who is invalid, you might have to talk to someone from the fire department to get a better plan on that one.

I would find a better apartment and does not your city have a code for a secondary escape route ==the roll up ladders work but can be difficult to negotiate and are not cheap

i would have thought they would have come down in price by now. but the reason that ladders are not the best idea is because the way buildings are built tindows are symetrical so your ladder will go over 2 more windows on the way to the ground. each of these could in the event of a fire have flames shooting out of them. the best way to decend to the ground would be one of these decent cables...but it's only rated for two people. here a little video to give you an idea.

Well thank you, just remembet to have offst hanger placed securely so you don't drag down the building....and shop around, because i can't see such a simple mechanism still selling for so much, but then again it's a compliance it. i have a deep rooted feer of fire too, and i understood what you were looking for. i wish you all the best .
