The federal government consists of three branches, the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. The judicial branch is the federal court system and the US Supreme court.

Like meltdown said. The function of the judiciary is to interpet laws passed by Congress and act as a check on Executive power.

Yup - the system of checks and balances between the three banches (executive, legislative and judiciary) ensures that one branch won't get more power than another ensuring protection of our freedoms.
