What else is he doing? is he running or working out a lot. those could cause him to lose weight quickly.

Going to the doc for a physical may not be a bad thing to do. I don't think it is severe enough to go to the ER though. Getting checked out is always a good thing.

Of course I will have the psychological perspective.

The thing that set off alarms in my head is the fact that he won't go to the doctor. If you are 19 years old, and you get a parasite or something and you start losing weight uncontrollably, fear will motivate you to go to the doctor.

We tend to associate eating disorders with women because 99% of the time that is what we read about and see. It is a fact that people (including doctors) consider medical reasons for aliments and psychological for women. Research in 2007 from Harvard Medical School suggests that up to 25% or adults (18 and older) with eating disorders are men.

Was he overweight as a child?
Has he been dieting (most common trigger)?
Is he involved with a sport that demands thinness?
Does he have a job that requires thinness?
Has he started dating someone new?

Even if he is eating fine, he could be bulimic, or using laxatives and eating to not alarm you. People with eating disorders are often very embarrassed about it, so you have to approach them directly like you would with an addict of any kind.

Men with eating disorders usually benefit more from one-on-one therapy as opposed to group therapy because more support groups are designed for women.

One other possibility I had thought of is drug use. Rapid weight loss can be attributed to meth, crack, cocaine and heroine.

Meth has had a HUGE growth for people about your son's age because it can be made in a basement with chemicals that anyone can buy, so it's fairly cheap. Here are signs that might key you in to whether he might be using:

Rapid weight loss is the first indication
Eating binges are common when coming off the drug
Becoming careless about their appearance and overall well-being
May stop brushing their teeth and taking showers for extended periods of time
Aggressive behavior
Paranoia of friends and family
Talking about deceptions and lies (generally more pessimistic)
Days of being wide awake and days of sleeping

Object to be aware of:

Burned aluminum foil or light bulbs turned into smoking devices
Empty pen casings
Cut drinking straws
Lighters for someone who doesn't smoke

I was going to say drug use too, i know aolt of people who have lost weight due to drugs and he is 19 not wanting to go to the doctor maybe a fear of being caught and you finding out... sorry that had to be said but i hope yall figure it out..

Me to, I think Jodi hit the nail on the head, she said everything I as a doctor would have said, and then everything I would have expected her as a psychologist to say. Nice job Jodi.
