It could be the gear teeth are worn out inside the rear, end , and a bearing could be out , causing the shaft to slip , id pull the rear end , and check the race, and shaft, if it , is worn replace it before it cocks up , and busts the rear gear!

Anyone have an exploded diagram of the shaft/gears in question here? I know that the clutch pedal controlls the engagement of the p.t.o.,and it still works the foward/reverse movement of the tractor.
Also,the hydralkic lift is'nt strong at all. Are these related problems?

Yes they are , the gear that connects to the lift , is run off the pump , that helps the pto, and you know your pump for the lift might be bad, or it may be low of oil, have you checked the oil for the trans , rear end , and pump , ? dont have a diagram
The oil level is right on the mark. I'll pull the top cover and see what I can see.
