Payment of health insurance premiums

Upon employment i signed up for family health insurance at what i was told would be approx. 360.00 dollars per month. yesterday my company called and told me that they had not deducted the premiums for the last 11 months, and i owed them 5,703.00 dollars. that comes to over 500.00 dollars per month. if i terminate my employment, am i obligated to pay them, or can they legally recoup this money through garnishment of wages?
