Putin as Time's Person of the year... Really?

The competition was fierce - he beat out Al Gore (inventor of the internet), JK Rowling, and Hu Jintao for the spot.

What do you think? If you could pick Person of the Year who would you pick?

What did he do?

Al Gore would be a good pick. Bono is always a good choice. Justin Timberlake has done alot of good in the entertainment world.

I'm not a JK Rowling fan, so what, she wrote one of the biggest selling series of all time, and came out of poverty to do it. I don't think that makes her person of the year award. even though barbara walters said she was the most fascinating person of 2007.

I agree - Bono would be a good person of the year. Oprah would be my all time pick!

I can see Putin as person of the year in terms of being a newsmaker and having an impact on the world. He's really crafted Russia into a nice little oligarchy and is ensuring his presence is felt for decades to come. Futher, after being down and out for so long, Russia is again active on the international scene, though maybe not the way the US likes. Further, his crackdown on protest shows that not just Communists do things most free thinking people like.

Bono hasn't done a lot this year. I think there was more noise in years past. Oprah's big every year but only in the US and now South Africa. The person of the year needs to be active on the international stage. Gore would have been good but he got the Nobel.

Putin, like him or hate him has been very noteworthy.
