Yes - they are absolutely necessary. Schools are only good if they can prove that their students are actually acquiring knowledge and the only way to objectively prove that you have learned the material they are legally responsible for teaching you is by testing you on the material. Good luck and get lots of coffee!
Plus - this will prepare you for college where a professor doesn't care if you have 10 other papers due, a job, a boyfriend or a sick dog, lol. Really - it's not that bad:)

I can understand why that is frustrating for you, as it may seem like a punishment from your perspective. Think about it from your teacher's perspective - they really do rarely do thing just to be mean or because they have power over you. Maybe they feel that you don't take class seriously and they want to make sure that you got what you needed to from the class. Like I said - it may suck now, but when you go to college and everyone else is freaking out about finals, you'll already have done that and you'll get the heads up.
Like my dad always says (and I hate it) - Life isn't fair. lol. It sucks, but you'll be smarter for it! Then you can go shopping when you're done and treat yourself to something for all of your efforts!
