That all depends on what type of fire extinguisher it is. All fire extinguishers are labeled with classes. There is Class A, B, C, D, and K, as well as combination classes such as ABC. Different classes, fight different types of fire, and thus have different substances in them.

The most common class of extinguishers in homes today are Class ABC extinguishers. They usually contain a dry fire smothering powder, and a pressurized gas to push out the powder when you squeeze the handle.
