How do you know if an image is protected by a copyright?

My 10 year old composed a piece for piano titled The Quidditch Cup, playing off of the fun of the game in Harry Potter. She is entering the piece in a state competition and needs an illustration for the cover. Can we use an image from the Harry Potter DVD cover? Can we use an image from The Warner Bors Entertainment video game of quidditch? Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely,
Jhan Beaullieu

You cannot use any images without the expressed consent of the copyright owner. This information is usually found somewhere on the DVD where you can write to them to request it. Generally there is a fee involved and it is quite a lengthy process, so if time is a constraint I wouldn't be too hopeful. If you choose to contact them you must give great detail as to why you wish to use it, and it would be helpful to send a copy of the material you are using it for as well as a detailed decription of the image you wish to procure. Thank you very much for your comment. I have taken it to heart and will just have my daughter draw her own image.
