Make sure your sound system is adequate and then promote. Get out there and make the offer to do some freebies if you have to and get your name known. There are a lot of clubs that would love a free night of entertainment. Think big. Use that money to travel wherever you have to go and cut a CD. Use it to make Cd's for sale and distribution. You can copy them on your own computer, you know,at about a cost of $.50 each.....that includes a CD plastic cover and for just a few cents more you can put the album info on the CD top with those CD sticky covers.
Have really cool tshirts with your band name and logo on them and throw them into the crowd. You can get really good rates when you order in bulk. Then be sure to have them available for sale as well along with your CD's.
Some of this requires computer skills and maybe even graphic or drawing skills. Utilize friends, relatives and coworkers to help you out. Being associated with a band is exciting and most people would love to help.
Once word gets around about you, they won't be getting any more freebies.

Yea i agree with musicalpat but i would also have to say make sure you have good equipment to play with first.
my dads in a band and hes always askin me to give his cds out at school.
so if you can give some free stuff away and play some free places it REALLY does help
just dont get greedy, or else ur not gonna get far, cuz people cant stand people just out for money

I don't know if I would call it an "investment" because there isn't an known income in the near future from your investment.

I'd look at it more like a hobby.

First make sure you got gear to play, keyboards/drums/guitars/bass/mics/pedals/etc.

Then make sure you got gear that you can play live, speakers/amps/other things for live shows

Once you got all that, just start getting a following for your live shows.

Once you have that following, you can start thinking about producing a cd and selling it at your shows and to your fans. That is where you'll need that $5k assuming you already have all the above gear I mentioned.

just know that going into studio, producing a cd isn't cheap, and you may not see a return on investment in the near future.

Good luck.

Why not invest in something that is a proven investment? Like stocks and bonds?

My band was signed to a major recording contract in the past so we aren't starting from the ground floor. We be jarring some folks memory and we have worked professionally for some years now. We are grappling with the idea of changing our name, but I think that we should keep the name that people know us by. We play hip hop/fusion so most of the venus will have amps and our band has instruments. I'm a musician/writer not a stock broker, have you looked at the market lately Fakery? The best investment that I could make would be in myself. This being said we need to et right to the music and have an industry showcase, thats what we're gearing up for. Any suggestions......HOLLA

This answer sounds like someone who knows a thing or two about what was asked. If you have no experience or don't know saying nothing is best because this is a great outlet to get public support. It should be taken seriously.

If you are established and have a name, don't change the name. Why take the time having to go through a rebranding period.

Good luck with your band :)
