5 yr german shep w/ black flat spots that itch...help?

My dog has small flat black itchy spots on her coat. Not consistent, but in a couple of places on her belly and back. she itches a lot, i've tried benadryl per: the vet, no relief. the spots seem to be flat to the skin, embedded even a little, and she's got a raw patch on her left back foot. another red balding spot on her right upper leg. her appetite is off, she's not dehydrated, but the itching is driving her crazy! me too! anyone have some help?

Sounds exactly like what my dog had! It sounds like a parasite infection, with either fleas, or chiggers, or some other sort of small pest. We decided we didn't want to let the vet give them a pesticide dip as these can be expensive and dangerous for the animal, so we found a home remedy instead. Mix a cup of borax with two cups of hydrogen peroxide in a gallon of water and pour it all over the dog, letting it sit for about 10 minutes. When this is done wash the dog again with flea and tick shampoo, letting that sit for about 5 minutes. Finally, rinse the dog really really really well, being sure to get all of the shampoo off as this can further irritate the skin and cause more itching if any is left behind. Hope this works for you as well as it worked for me!

Thanks, Keshrode, for your input. She's doing better after a bath...i'm hesitant to use borax on her though-she's so raw in some areas, and has allergies that i don't want to irritate, but i'll keep your suggestion in mind if this creepy thing crawls up again! Appreciate your answer! Good luck! -Sasha's Mom
