Rawhide chews are a great treat for your dog, however, keep in mind that too much of a good thing can be bad. Dogs have been known to swallow the rawhide whole. This can cause serious stomach blockages because when the rawhide gets wet from the stomach juices, it swells to twice its normal size. I am not saying that you should stop giving your pet rawhide chews, I am suggesting that you should supervise and take the rawhide away if your dog does not adequately chew the pieces.

Rawhide can be good in terms of cleaning the dog's teeth, however it is not ideal as a "food" and if the puppy eats too much of it he/she will fill up on that instead of the nutrients needed in the puppy food. Make sure that the rawhide you are giving your puppy is sized appropriately (not too big), and try to limit the rawhide to less than every day. It should be given as a treat, not as a primary chewing item. Toys are available at the store for chewing, and are meant to stay in one piece.

The danger of giving your puppy a rawhide is at while chewing, pieces if the rawhide bean off and the dog actually consumes the rawhide. There have been cases where intestional blockage has been caused by pieced of rawhide. I give my dogs marrow bones to chew on. Marrow bones canIbe purchased from your local butcher, he can cut them to size for your dog. I keep hem frozen and only allow my dogs to chew them while in their kennels. The dogs will chew the center out and be outer ring will be left, I keep these and out peanut butter in them, he dogs love this!

I also use 'Kong's for my dogs, they love them, too.
Good Luck!
