You might not want to bother spending the money on the flea collars at all. I own an animal rescue org and can promise you that they don't work. Fleas would have to run up right onto the collar and hang around long enough to die, which just doesn't happen.
In the pet industry, since it's not a drug or a food, there are very few limits on what they can claim. So all those great commercials and ads are, at best, great big stretches of fact. The 'fact' is that there's a pesticide in these products. Period. The rest of the claims about preventing or killing fleas only applies to those fleas that are suicidal and set up camp right at or on the product.
As for having anything like this around your bird, as long as your bird isn't allowed to touch your dog - it should be fine. What we don't want is a bird nibbling on the collar or getting into any other flea product like sprays, drops or powders.
And by the way - the mite protectors for bird cages and mite sprays ? Another complete waste of money. Birds kept indoors very rarely have mites and when they do, the treatment is usually and ORAL medication provided by prescription only.
It's a shame how much the pet industry takes advantage of people trying to do the right thing by their pets.
For a flea treatment that you don't have to buy and is perfectly safe using products probably already in your home, look at www.4AnimalCare.org - the Cat & Dog page
Good luck!
