Some pet adoption agreements require a visitation by an employee of the rescue operation, but this is usually set up at the time of adoption, and is never a surprise. They just want to be sure that the dog is properly cared for, i.e food, shelter, water, and sometimes, not on a chain or line. They also want to be sure that the dog is a good fit for your family. For instance, we once returned a dog that we brought home from the rescue operation here, because it started nipping our son. She was a good dog, but not a good fit for us. We suggested that she be placed with a family without small children. They were very understanding, and glad to have the information about the dog. Later, we got another dog from the same shelter, and this one is a great fit for us. He loves our son! If a visit is required, they leave you completely alone afterwards. The dog is YOURS after that.
