The first step is to shave the area around the spot, this will allow for more air flow, and faster healing. Wash the area with betadine shampoo or surgical scrub, being sure to rinse well. An excellent product to apply is Sergeant's Vetscription Hot spot Skin remedy, available at most pets stores and in your supermarket pet aisle. It is important however to determine the cause of the spot. Ring worm or other fungal infections are a likely cause. If the spot doesn't clear up in a few days, or spreads or becomes worse, you will want to see your vet for further treatment. Keeping your dog busy with chew toys and walks will help keep his mind of the itching.
