You should! You have taken care of it and paid for it's expenses. If someone did that to a child you would have recourse.

I think the court would ask you several questions, who payed for food, vet visits, vaccines, etc.. I did go through something similar several years ago, ended up in court, I still have the dog. As obviously from what you said, the pet was clearly abandoned by it's owner, from my experience I would think the animal now belongs to you. Possesion being 9/10ths of law, and animals being private property, I do believe they fall under other abandonment of property laws. You would need to check with a lawyer, most will do a free consultation, and if not, I would think you would be entitled to compensation for care, food, vet costs etc..

Tell them they are more than welcome to have the pet back if they pay for room and board at the going kennel rate for all the time you had it. That should shut them up.

That happened to me once. A coworker got evicted from his house and had to move into an apartment, so I took care of his dog for a while. A year later he moved into another house and wanted the dog back. I emphasized with the guy, but refused him and kept the dog. The dog and I had bonded by that time. I figured if he abandoned the dog once, he might do it again.

If you take good care of the pet, I'd say keep it. Would that ruin your friendship with the other person?

Tough situation for sure. I might be inclined to give the pet back if the original owner is a good pet owner - aside from giving to you for 15 months. I guess - ask yourself if the pet will be in better hands if in your own. If it's about equal - I would keep the friendship, give the pet back and use this as a reason for getting a new pet. If the original owner would not take as good of care of it - then you are in a sticky situation. I could not even begin to speculate on the legalities either way.

But what about the bond you created with the pet over the past 15 months. It would be very hard for me to give up the pet. Tell the owner it has been too long, and time for them to get a new pet.

Why did they wait so long to re-claim this pet???

I'd give it back and then make them pay for everything I had to pay for the pet e.i. vet visits, food etc.
