Protection training

How old should your dog be for "real" training? I heard I should wait till he's a year old. I want to do protective training, but don't have the $$$ for a profesional trainer. Is there a free or cheap site to help with protective training? I'm home 90% of the time so I have the time to put into it, but not a lot of $$$. Right now he just barks and acts stupid - although he knows all the tricks of our adult dog - if we have treats - Basically I think he is smarter than me, but acts dumb.... He is definatly "reward" minded. Suggestions??? (Ruchele???)

I trained my Shepard when she was about 1 year old. She was had her on a leash and had someone stand about 10 feet away. Hold the leash tight so it polls on him and tell him to "whatch him" as you poll on the leash. Sould get the idea. He will think the person is a threat. Try that at first. When he starts to poll then he has the idea.

He is such a goof!! LOL It is never to early to start training your pup, younger pups will simply have more frequent and shorter periods of training, starting at about 8 weeks old you can do 2-3 minutes 10-15 times a day, as they get older you will increase the time, working towarad 15-30 minute sessions 2-3 times a day. You also never stop training your dog, the things learned need to be reinforced on a daily bases, so spending 15 minutes a day reminding your dog should be a routine.

I would start with basic obediance training. I recommend this site often for people who want to train there own dogs. Good Luck, and if you need anything else you know how to get ahold of me ;-) And remember when you decide to begin guard dog training, you will want to work under the guiadance of a pro, as miss training a guard dog can be very dangerous for your health and pockett book.

Hi hpe this answers your question. Most traing places start with Obedience Training which Starts from the age of 4 Months or 16 weeks old and onwards. Guard Work Starts at the age of 12 months & onwards Agility can start at 4 Months old & onwards And no dog is dum thay just like to have fun when they are young.
