Puppy without shots?

I just looked at a six week old chihuahua puppy. It had not had any shots but had been wormed. I love the puppy but I am concerned about the shots. The owner said that they would give her its shots but I was wondering if there are risks with how long the shot needed to be given before moving it to a new home? Is there a waiting period or once the shot is given it will be ok. Thank you for your reponse.

Puppies at 6 weeks are too young to leave their mother, 8 - 12 weeks is better.

It's not a matter of the shot schedule, it's really just that puppies need to be with their mothers for a while.

Here's the shot schedule your puppy will need:

6-8 weeks: 1st puppy shot
11 - 12 weeks: 2nd puppy shot
15-16 weeks: 3rd puppy shot
Over 4 months: Rabies shot
7-9 months: Heart worm
Then, as an adult, dogs get shots every year.

Some breeders give them shots and some wait until they go to their new homes - Primetime has the right schedule.

As far as your concern about getting the puppy shots and transitioning to your house, puppies are pretty resilient and having shots is not a horribly traumatic event, but after shots if you give your puppy lots of attention that can be a good bonding experience for you two.

If you are worried that the vet may find something wrong with the puppy after you buy it, you can ask the owner if she will give you a health guarantee. My mom was a breeder and gave a health guarentee with her puppies.
