Benedryl®
Treat allergies, itching, reaction to insect stings, etc.
Allergies:
1) Antihistamines alleviate the problem. Your vet may recommend an OTC drug like Benadryl (Diphenhydramine). Typical dosage would be 1 to 3 milligrams for every pound of pet but you MUST ask your vet for the precise dosage before proceeding. "Remember that note every product can be right for your pet. You may have to try a few before deciding which one works best for your pet." says Lloyd Reedy, D.V.M. a Veterinary Dermatologist, and clinical associate professor of Comparative Medicine at the Health Science Center of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and author of Allergic Skin Diseases of Dogs and Cats. He adds that a 4 to 6 day trial of each will indicate if the medication is effective. "Use the medication only when symptoms flare and give the medication daily during the allergy season if needed." Dr. Reedy added.
2) Fatty Acid Supplements - According to William H. Miller V.M.D. associate professor of medicine at the Cornell University college of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca New York, to help calm itchy skin, give your pet fatty acid supplements which is used for relieving mange and other skin disorders. They come in capsules and are available in pet stores and from your Vet who will give the right dosage for your pet. It will be difficult to have your pet swallow a capsule and an easier way is to break the capsule and squeezing the oil into your pet's food. Dr. Ackerman adds that it is effective in about 20% of dogs but perhaps 25% to 30% of cats because of the supplement's fishy taste that cat's like.
3) Cool Water or Oatmeal Bath - Bathe your pet in COOL water (warm water aggravates the itch) and you can make a soothing soak with a colloidal oatmeal like Aveeno. The water will be smooth and soothing for your dog.
My oldest dog has allergies and I got a book from the library of pet home remendies and it said to give your dog cooked oatmeal and I love the stuff so i'd give him some of mine and it works great he ain't sneezing and breathing good and no more itching and the windows are open
Hope this helps
