It isn't at all hard to believe President Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, if you understand the basic philosophy and history behind the Republican party.
Yes, Abraham Lincoln would still be considered to be a Republican by today's standards. Today's standards are not any different than the standards during the time period in which Abraham Lincoln lived.
The truth of the matter is that Republicans in the Southern States were against Slavery, while Southern Democrats were passionately in favor of Slavery. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. If Abraham Lincoln had been a Democrat, Slavery would probably still be legal today.
If you want to learn a little bit about the Republican Party's viewpoints in the year 1860, including Republican views about Slavery, read the historical "Republican National Platform" document.
The "Republican National Platform Adopted At Chicago, 1860" document also explains some of the basic differences between Republicans and Democrats. You will see that today's standards are the same standards as those in President Abraham Lincoln's Era.
