If I am not given a copy of a contract to the house I rent, does that void the agreement?

My son has a rental agreement and his Boss told him that if was not given a copy of the rental agreement that makes it null and void?

Didnt think so but what is your opinion.

He needs to get a copy to protect himself.
without a copy, there is no proof he signed anthing, he would not get his deposit back & the landowner could give him a 30 day notice at any time & say nothing was signed.
