What are my rights when the seller left personal property?

I started renting my home in 2006. I purchased my home in September 2007. The seller left personal items in the home I purchased. I wrote him a letter in January of 2008 and asked him when he was going to get the items. I didn't get a response until the first of April 2008 when he stated that he would get the things on April 27 and 28. He has never came and got the items. Can I dispose of them legally?

Call your local authorities and inquire how you might dispose of abandoned property. The law varies in each State.
