The right of survivorship allows two or more owners of property (land, money, stuff) to inherit that property when one of the owners dies. This is important because the deceased owner's will may give his property to someone else, but the right of survivorship trumps all other claims. http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Right+of+Survivorship

An example of this could be a piece of land owned by two people and one dies. The other gets the entire property.
