If your city/county has its own website: search the legal notices. I'm in TX, they post all foreclosure notices on the city website through their link that says legal notices. Other resources are the tax assessor office (for tax foreclosures) the tax appraisal offices, and in some places people at local chamber of commerce can refer you. If your landlord has died, the social security death index may have it by now. Since the checks are being cashed, you can ask your bank for a copy of the front and back of the most recent check showing who cashed it.
If you go to the county clerk's office, you can look for the deed on your house. It will show who the lender was, you can contact them. And last of all, you can get a copy of any lien or judgement against any property from the county clerk's office. Start there!
Hope this helps. Don't wait for a sheriff to show up and evict you because the house foreclosed and you didn't know. BTW, if it is in foreclosure, I wouldn't give them any more rent, but I'd put the payment in escrow; this needs an attorney, though. GOOD LUCK
