How can I take better pictures of my kids?

It's a family joke that I take the worst photos (80% of which are crooked or have my thumb in front). Can you give me some tips on taking good pictures of kids?

Someone gave me some good advice which I can share. Ask the kids to pose for you, but take the photos in between different poses. That's when their personality comes out.

Also, try and keep your thumb out of the way ;)
