Beginner (60)

If you roll five dice at one time, what are the odds that each dice will have the same number?

So if you roll all five dice at one time, what are the odds that they will come up all the same number (ones or two's, etc.?)

I would say the odds would be 1 in 30 (5 dice with 6 possibilities of numbers each). Sometimes it seems the odds are better than that when playing Yahtzee but that's the only logical way I can see to look at it.

Actually it would be more than that because you would have to go through all the possibilities of 1,1,1,1,2 1,1,1,1,3 1,1,1,1,4 and do that for each number on each die. I used to know how to figure this out but I'm now old and have forgotten. :(

You know I pondererd that after I posted my answer and couldn't figure it out either! I figured....ah well, I'll wait and see if a real math brain oriented person can give a better answer. Hey Jodi-Mesa.....I know you're great with numbers. What would be the proper solution for this question? Laughing here......Now it's REALLY got me curious!

The odds of getting all 1's would be

1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 for 1/7776 or (1/6)^5

then add up the 6 chances it could be

(1/6)^5*6

or

1/1296 or a 0.07% chance of all the dice coming up the same number (which is why you usually don't see a yatzee on the first roll during the course of a yazee game)

and, i'm assuming you mean 6 sided dice, and not 4, 8, 10, 12, 20, 100 sided dice.
