What do you recommend for a first time outside projector and audio system?

I would like to start holding movie nights in our community

To start out, why not just go as cheaply as you can. Just get a screen large enough for a decent sized crowd and a sound system. if it starts taking off, then get the better equipment and gear.

and don't forget the popcorn :)

Oh - Have you seen the blowup projection screens? They use one at a local park here and they can be clearly seen for like 1/4 mile. See if you can take donations, or get food donated to sell at the screening.
