How do I start to get a divorce?

I have been separated for over two years. We have multiple properties and she won't agree on how to separate them or how much to sell them for. I have written her a letter trying to come to an agreement on who gets which properties. She seems agreeable but then no progress gets made. We seem to be at a standstill and I need to know what to do to get the ball rolling. Can I take her to court to get a divorce without an attorney. How would I do it?

Without an attorney to help guide you through the legal maze of laws, this could get messy, complicated and expensive in a hurry if handled wrong. You might want to try presenting these facts to her as a last resort to get her going. Most attorneys will give the first consultation free. It is very likely that you know someone who knows someone who could at least write a "motivational" letter on a legal letterhead. This will let her know that you're tired of waiting and hopefully will get the dialogue going.

Some divorce courts have "mediators" to help with this. I don't know your location but call the clerk of the court wher divorces are filed and ask. Also see if the court has a "self-help" center either online or at the courthouse.

Because it stated what I knew and added to information I already received from friends who had gone through a divorce.
