I agree, they could be talking about the boys. After many years, maybe they are both growing more mature and they realize they need to both be there for their kids now that they have more needs for a mom and a dad. I wouldn't waste time being jealous and if you ask him, he would probably say something to the effect of wanted to help with the kids.
He does have kids with her, and their lives will always be intertwined because of the kids they have together.
It doesn't sound suspicious or anything that he is talking to her more. If they are friends, it will make things easier for their kids.
I think everything is fine between you and him.
