The American Association of Pediatrics recommends that babies be breast fed for at least a year. The World Health Organizations recommends that babies be breast fed for two years. My personal opinion is that whenever you feel your child is getting enough nutrition from other foods and is able to drink from a sippy cup to get plenty of liquids then it's safe to stop the breast feeding.
My opinion is that a child is too old to breast feed when he or she is old enough that they will remember breastfeeding in the future. I was breastfed but I sure am glad I don't remember it!
In my opinion, it is soon after they get those top teeth! Ouch! Really though, it's a personal decision and one that has to work for both mother and child. Some children have trouble weaning off the breast on to the bottle and may need some time to do so.
