The term "popping your cherry" is used to refer to someone doing something for the very first time. It is also commonly used to refer to a woman having sexual intercourse for the first time. The "cherry" or hymen is a thin layer of skin protecting the entrance to the vagina and even though it can be broken through sex, tampon usage, and activities such as sports, bicycling and horseback riding, the term refers to breaking it through sexual intercourse. Women can notice a little spot of blood or or not at all, while some bleed a lot.
