Well, who wouldn't want a garden full of Naked Ladies?
Seriously, Amaryllis belladonna has the great advantage of blooming in August/September when other bulbs have long since quit, and they love heat and dryness. They are perfect for sloping hillsides or other areas you don't water during the summer, and where you will get a great blast of color, as where they are happy they will naturalize.
They don't like it too wet, though, so don't put them in the irrigated part of the garden or in shade. They are dormant during the winter, so they can survive an occasional freeze as long as they are well drained - gravel or sand.
