Why would you not be friends with this person?

A disabled person- mental retardation, paralyzed, blind, down syndrome, deaf, learning disabilities..etc.

This isn't a trick...its for an essay and i have to have all kinds of peoples thoughts on this.

Please let me know why you would not be friends with a person with a disability if you feel that way or if youve ever felt that way. Sometimes feeling sorry for them and not understanding is why...or maybe it would be embaressing? Those are some of them.

But please let me know what u think about it...

I had a good friend once with cerebral palsy. What i really liked about him was his attitude; he was fun, positive and didn't care about the disability. He had accepted it and it's who he was. His attitude broke down a lot of social barriers. Once you got to know him, you didn't notice the disability.

This is a difficult question for sure. In a fast paced world we forget what's important sometimes. Trying to keep up with the speed-of-life may be a barrier for a lot of us to making friends with disabled people.

Feeling sorry for them, thats part of it. maybe people lack the sympathy. guys tend to be clueless anyway when it comes to this stuff. i avoid my girlfriend when she gets a minor sickness like having the flu. guess i just dont know what to do.

It might be just about people feeling embarrassed, don't know. everyone made fun of a disabled kid in high school, it was cruel, but if you did anything about it you weren't cool. so peer pressure has a lot to do with it.

Having a disability is not a reason not to be friends with someone.

I know a few people that are blind or with disabilities are some of the nicest most warm loving people I know.

This is stupid....you should be friends with people because of who they are, not what they look like or if they are disabled.
