What is an example of a non-acidic liquid that can be used in my daughter's science project?

My daughter is a 4th grader and she is working on a science project which tests a banana immersed in non-acidic liquids to see which liquid will rot the banana first. She has milk mixed with baking soda and water suggested by her teacher as one choice. She needs one other liquid for her experiment and we are having a hard time coming up with another choice. We don't want to know the answer to her experiment ... she just needs to pick another non-acidic liquid to write up in her rough draft which is due to be turned in tomorrow.

Thanks!

Baking soda is acidic , its dried from soda ash , which is a acid from burning soda in in a chemical reaction , but if she can get by with that , tell her to try orange juice and , apple juice mix, its really a nuature thing , and will eat the nana up fast

It is more fun if you try several liquids. Water all by itself should be one of them. Also try coca-cola, vinegar, milk by itself and motor oil. My bet is that the banana in water will rot first since there's no substance in the water that kills bacteria. Use a pure bottled or distilled water, not tap water. Sometimes tap water has chemicals in it to kill bacteria.

Water is the easiest and a pretty good control substance as well. It sounds like you can use either neutral or alkali liquids since baking soda is an alkali. Another alkali is ammonia.

let us now what she picks and how the experiement turns out.

For 4th grade science, they will be focusing on just acids, and bases, they will be ignoring more technical terms like alkali etc.. for a few more years. You determine if a liquid is an acid or a base based on its Ph level on a scale of 0 - 14, distilled water is a 7 so it is neutral, being neither an acid nor a base. An acid is anythig from 0 to 6 and a base is anything from 8 to 14. Another word for base is alkali. Baking soda is a base, so is sodium carbonate (borax), ammonia, egg whites, mineral lime, and drano.

Thanks for this answer. We were really looking for some other liquid choices and you explained this concept well for us. (acid vs base). I will post the results after her experiment is finished and let you know what she chose to use.
