Hanging baskets/plants keep dying. What am I doing wrong?

My porch faces W/NW so it gets mostly late afternoon sun. I bought three hanging planters with mostly petunias in them. They died within 2 days. Just started wilting and died. I bought 3 more from a different place and the same thing is happening. What am I doing wrong? I don't think I am overwatering them (about a cup and a half per basket). I even drilled holes in the bottom of the container thinking they maybe were watered too much and were drowning the roots.
