Alfred Adler was originally a follower of Freud's theories of psychoanalysis. Eventually he broke with Freud to establish his own system known as "individual psychology". He is best known for his theory of the inferiority complex, which relates to a lack of self-esteem. Adler was also convinced that treating people as equals would prevent a lot of psychological problems. This was reflected in the fact that he was the first therapist to stop having his patients lie on a couch during their sessions with him. Instead, the patient sat on another chair, facing Adler, which helped to put patient and therapist on a more equal basis.
